Background
Murshidabad, the historic capital of Bengal under the Nawabs in the eighteenth century, has long been a centre of administrative and cultural importance. Higher education in the district was for many decades anchored by Krishnath College in Berhampore, an institution that drew its name from the same Cossimbazar lineage. The establishment of a dedicated state university in the district reflects the West Bengal government's broader policy of expanding tertiary education by creating district-level universities, alongside other recent foundations such as Raiganj University, Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University and Bankura University.
Academic role
As a state public university, the institution operates under the regulatory framework of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Government of West Bengal's Department of Higher Education. It functions within the system of state universities serving the northern and central districts of West Bengal, offering programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the arts, sciences and allied disciplines.
Significance
The university adds to the network of higher education institutions in the Murshidabad region, which has historically sent students to colleges affiliated with the University of Calcutta and the University of Kalyani. By commemorating Maharaja Krishnanath, whose family endowed several educational and cultural institutions in Berhampore and Cossimbazar, the university also preserves a link with the philanthropic traditions of nineteenth-century Bengal.
