Background
The franchise was conceived by Rajkumar Hirani as his directorial debut, developed in collaboration with producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The character of Munna Bhai is a Mumbai underworld figure with a soft heart, while Circuit is his trusted lieutenant. The films use this gangster–sidekick template as a vehicle for broader social themes, deploying humour to explore questions of human values in contemporary urban India. Sanjay Dutt's casting in the title role drew on his established screen image, while Arshad Warsi's portrayal of Circuit became one of the defining supporting performances of the era.
Films
Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003)
The first film, released in December 2003, follows Munna, a small-time don who pretends to be a doctor to please his father, eventually enrolling in a medical college. The narrative satirises the rigidity of medical education and introduces the concept of "jadoo ki jhappi" (the magical hug) as a form of empathetic healing. The film starred Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Gracy Singh, Sunil Dutt, and Boman Irani as the strict Dean Dr. J. C. Asthana. It won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)
The sequel, released in September 2006, sees Munna encounter the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi and propagate the philosophy of "Gandhigiri" — applying Gandhian non-violence and truth in everyday life. Vidya Balan joined the cast as the female lead, with Dilip Prabhavalkar portraying Gandhi. The film was credited with reviving popular interest in Gandhian thought and was screened at the United Nations. It received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and the Filmfare Award for Best Film, among others.

Music
The soundtracks were composed by Anu Malik for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and by Shantanu Moitra for Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Songs such as "M Bole Toh", "Bande Me Tha Dum" and "Lage Raho Munna Bhai" became popular and contributed to the cultural footprint of the films.
Significance and Cultural Impact
The franchise introduced two enduring popular concepts into Indian public discourse: the jadoo ki jhappi, symbolising emotional warmth as therapy, and Gandhigiri, an informal, applied form of Gandhism. Following the release of Lage Raho Munna Bhai, the term "Gandhigiri" entered mainstream usage in Indian media and was invoked in civic protests and editorial commentary. The films are also credited with re-establishing Sanjay Dutt as a leading comic actor and propelling Rajkumar Hirani to the front rank of Hindi film directors, paving the way for his later projects such as 3 Idiots and PK.
Proposed Third Film
A third instalment, often referred to in the press as Munna Bhai Chale Amerika or Munna Bhai 3, has been discussed publicly by Hirani and Chopra on multiple occasions. As of the latest publicly confirmed information, the project has remained in development and has not entered production.
