Overview
Morgan House stands on the Durpin Dara ridge in the southern part of Kalimpong, an area known for its panoramic views of the surrounding hills and, on clear days, the Kanchenjunga range. The mansion is set within a wooded estate and retains much of its original character, including stone construction, sloping roofs, wooden interiors and period fittings.
Background
The house was constructed during the early decades of the twentieth century, the period when Kalimpong functioned as a trading outpost on the route to Tibet and as a summer retreat for British officials, planters and missionaries based in Bengal. The mansion is associated with the Morgan family, after whom it is named; it served as a private residence before passing into government use after Indian independence.
Use as a tourist lodge
Morgan House is now run as a heritage accommodation under the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation, with a limited number of rooms available to visitors. The property is among the better-known heritage stays in Kalimpong, along with the Himalayan Hotel and other colonial-era buildings in the town.
Significance
The mansion is considered part of Kalimpong's colonial heritage and is frequently cited in travel writing for its architecture, its setting on Durpin Dara and the local folklore that has developed around it. Together with institutions such as Dr. Graham's Homes, the Scottish-era churches and the Tibetan monasteries of the area, Morgan House contributes to Kalimpong's identity as a hill town shaped by its colonial and cross-Himalayan history.
