Background
Mohan Babu hails from the Chittoor region of Andhra Pradesh. Before entering films, he worked as a physical education instructor. He began his cinema career as a disciple of veteran Telugu filmmaker Dasari Narayana Rao, who introduced him to the industry and cast him in several early projects.

Mohan Babu made his debut in Telugu films in the mid-1970s and went on to act in a large number of productions. He initially gained recognition through antagonist and supporting roles before transitioning into lead and central character parts. His filmography includes mythological, social, and family-oriented dramas, with notable titles such as Pedarayudu, Allari Mogudu, Rakshakudu, Major Chandrakanth, Assembly Rowdy, and Collector Gari Abbayi. Mohan Babu founded Sree Vidyanikethan, an educational complex located at Tirupati in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. The institutions are affiliated to recognised universities and statutory bodies in India.

Mohan Babu was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, where he served a term as a Member of Parliament. During his tenure he was associated with debates concerning the film industry and education in Andhra Pradesh.
Family
Mohan Babu's children are also active in Telugu cinema. His daughter Lakshmi Manchu works as an actress and producer; his elder son Manchu Vishnu is an actor and producer; and his younger son Manchu Manoj is also an actor in Telugu films. Together the family is often referred to in the media as the Manchu family.
