Geography
Moga lies on the plains of central Punjab, in the Malwa region south of the Sutlej river. The terrain is largely flat alluvial farmland, well suited to wheat, rice, and dairy production, which together form the backbone of the local economy. The city is connected to Ludhiana to the north-east and Ferozepur to the west by National Highway 95 (now part of the renumbered NH-5 corridor), and it functions as an important road junction for the surrounding rural belt.
Administration
Moga district was carved out as a separate district from Faridkot district in 1995, with the city of Moga as its administrative seat. The city is governed by a municipal corporation responsible for civic services, while district administration is headed by a Deputy Commissioner. Moga also forms a Vidhan Sabha (state assembly) constituency and falls within the Faridkot Lok Sabha constituency.
Economy
The economy of Moga is anchored in agriculture and agro-based industry. The city is well known as the location of one of the largest plants of Nestlé India, which has been engaged in milk procurement and dairy product manufacturing in the region for decades, drawing on the surrounding dairy belt. Grain markets (mandis), rice shellers, cotton ginning units, and small-scale engineering workshops also contribute significantly to the local economy.
Transport
- Road: Moga is served by the Ludhiana–Ferozepur national highway and by state highways linking it to Bathinda, Jalandhar and Faridkot.
- Rail: Moga railway station lies on the Ludhiana–Ferozepur line of Northern Railway, with regular passenger and express services.

Culture and society
Moga shares the broader cultural traditions of Malwa Punjab, with Punjabi as the dominant language and Sikhism as the largest religious community, alongside significant Hindu and other communities. Local fairs, gurdwara congregations, and agricultural festivals such as Baisakhi and Lohri are widely observed. The city has produced notable figures in Punjabi cinema, music and literature, and the surrounding district has a long association with Punjabi popular culture.
Education
Moga hosts a range of schools affiliated with the Punjab School Education Board and the Central Board of Secondary Education, along with degree colleges affiliated to universities in Punjab. Institutions in the city offer programmes in arts, commerce, science, education, and professional fields such as nursing and management, serving students from across the district and adjoining areas.
History
The settlement of Moga has long existed as a market town in the Malwa tract of Punjab. During the colonial period it was part of the Ferozepur district under the Punjab Province of British India. After Indian independence and the reorganisation of Punjab in 1966, Moga continued as a tehsil, first under Ferozepur district and later under Faridkot district, before being constituted as a separate district in 1995.
