The Modern Coach Factory (MCF) is a rail coach manufacturing unit of Indian Railways located at Lalganj in the Raebareli district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is one of the production units of Indian Railways established to augment the country's coach building capacity for passenger services.

Overview
MCF was set up to manufacture stainless steel passenger coaches for the Indian Railways network. It supplements the output of the older coach manufacturing units, namely the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at Chennai and the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) at Kapurthala. The factory produces coaches based on the LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) design, which has progressively replaced the older ICF design on long-distance trains.
Background
The factory was conceived as part of efforts to expand domestic rolling stock production and to support industrial development in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The site at Lalganj in Raebareli was selected for the new unit, with the project receiving central government approval and subsequent construction at the chosen site. The unit functions directly under the Railway Board as a dedicated production establishment, with its own General Manager.
Operations
MCF manufactures a range of LHB-pattern coaches, including:
- AC sleeper and chair-car coaches
- Non-AC sleeper coaches
- General second-class coaches
- Pantry cars and power cars
The coaches built at the factory are dispatched to various zonal railways across India for use on mail, express and other passenger services. The unit has progressively scaled up annual production since commencing operations.
Significance
The Modern Coach Factory is regarded as an important step in expanding Indian Railways' indigenous manufacturing capacity. By producing safer, stainless steel LHB coaches, it has contributed to the modernisation of the country's passenger fleet.
