Background and Education
Misbah hails from Pakistan and pursued higher education alongside his cricketing career, earning an MBA degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Management and Technology in Lahore, Punjab. Often described as a late bloomer in international cricket, he became known for his calm temperament at the crease, while retaining the ability to play aggressively and clear the boundary when the situation demanded.
Playing Career
Twenty20 Internationals
Misbah was part of the Pakistan squad that finished runners-up at the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007, reaching the final of that tournament. Two years later, he was a member of the Pakistan team that won the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, the country's first global limited-overs title in over two decades.
Captaincy
As captain, Misbah led Pakistan in Tests, One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. Under his leadership, Pakistan won the 2012 Asia Cup, with Misbah captaining the side to the title.
Records and Batting Style
In Test cricket, Misbah set the record for the fastest fifty and also a new record for the fastest Test hundred. In One Day International cricket, he holds the record for the most career ODI runs without scoring a century, a statistic that reflects both his longevity in the format and his role as a finisher rather than an anchor century-maker.
Retirement
Misbah announced his retirement from limited-overs cricket in 2015, but continued to represent Pakistan in Test cricket for a further period. On 4 April 2017, he announced that he would retire from all forms of international cricket at the conclusion of the tour of the West Indies. He played his final international match and formally retired from all formats on 14 May 2017.
Coaching and Administration
After his playing career, Misbah took on senior roles within Pakistani cricket, serving as the head coach of the Pakistan national cricket team as well as the team's chief selector. He has since stepped down from both positions.
Significance
Misbah's career is notable for the stability he brought to Pakistan cricket during a turbulent period, including years in which the national side could not host international matches at home. His record-breaking Test innings, his role in the 2009 World Twenty20 triumph and his captaincy success at the 2012 Asia Cup form the central pillars of his legacy in the game.
