The series revolves around Akhandanand Tripathi, popularly known as Kaleen Bhaiya, a carpet exporter and don who effectively rules Mirzapur through fear, illegal arms supply and political patronage. The narrative follows the entanglement of the Pandit family of Mirzapur — lawyer Ramakant Pandit and his sons Guddu and Bablu — with the Tripathi household, headed by Kaleen Bhaiya and his volatile son Munna. The story expands across successive seasons to include rival clans from Jaunpur, Lucknow, Siwan and other parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, along with the state's political establishment.

Reception and significance

Mirzapur is widely regarded as one of the defining titles of the Indian streaming era, alongside Sacred Games and The Family Man. It contributed to the mainstream popularity of stories rooted in small-town North India and helped establish Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu and Shweta Tripathi as recognisable streaming-era leads. The show's dialogue, costumes and the city of Mirzapur itself became part of popular culture, with tourism and merchandise referencing the series.

The series has also been the subject of public debate. It received criticism for its depiction of violence and explicit content, and a petition before the Supreme Court of India in 2020 sought regulation of such content on over-the-top platforms. Residents and public figures from Mirzapur have at various times objected to the portrayal of the city, and legal complaints were filed alleging that the series presented the district in a negative light.

Excel Entertainment and Amazon Prime Video have announced extensions of the Mirzapur universe, including a feature film continuation of the storyline. Tie-in fiction has also been published, with novels chronicling the back-stories of key characters such as Kaleen Bhaiya and the rise of the Tripathi family.
