Background and setting
The narrative is set in and around Mirzapur, a city in eastern Uttar Pradesh historically associated with carpet manufacturing and the brassware trade. The series uses this real geography as a backdrop for a fictional underworld in which local strongmen, known in the show as the "King of Mirzapur", exert influence over politics, policing and commerce across districts of Purvanchal including Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Balia and Lucknow. The story examines themes of caste hierarchy, masculinity, family loyalty, political patronage and the porous boundaries between organised crime and electoral politics in north India.
Plot synopsis
The first season introduces Akhandanand "Kaleen Bhaiya" Tripathi, the dominant don of Mirzapur, his volatile son Munna Tripathi, and the Pandit brothers Guddu and Bablu, sons of an upright lawyer Ramakant Pandit, who are drawn into the Tripathi syndicate. A blood feud erupts after a series of betrayals, setting the stage for subsequent seasons in which Guddu Pandit seeks vengeance and the throne of Mirzapur, while rival clans, political operators and the state machinery enter the conflict.

Production
The series is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under the banner of Excel Entertainment, the company also behind films such as Dil Chahta Hai, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Gully Boy. Karan Anshuman directed the first season along with Gurmmeet Singh and Mihir Desai. From the second season onward, Gurmmeet Singh and Mihir Desai took over as principal directors. Puneet Krishna serves as the head writer for the show. Filming has been carried out on location in Uttar Pradesh, including Mirzapur, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Varanasi, lending the series a distinct regional texture in dialogue, costume and milieu.
