Geography
Mira-Bhayandar lies on a salt-pan and creek-bound tract immediately north of the Dahisar river, which separates it from the Mumbai Suburban district. The city is bordered by the Vasai Creek to the north, the Thane Creek system to the east, and the Arabian Sea to the west. The terrain is largely low-lying, interspersed with mangrove belts, salt pans, and small hills, including parts of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park's catchment near Uttan and Gorai. Coastal villages such as Uttan, Pali, Chowk and Dongri lie on a peninsular extension to the west.
Civic administration
The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation was constituted in 2002, succeeding the earlier Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Council. The corporation is responsible for water supply, sanitation, roads, primary health, and town planning within its jurisdiction. The city falls under the Mira Bhayandar Vidhan Sabha constituency for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and forms part of the Bhiwandi Lok Sabha constituency for the Indian Parliament.
Transport
Mira Road and Bhayandar are stations on the Western Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, providing direct connectivity to Churchgate, Borivali, Andheri and Virar. The Western Express Highway and the Mumbai–Ahmedabad National Highway (NH 48) pass through the eastern parts of the city. Local transport is operated by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT) bus service. A ferry service across the Vasai Creek connects Bhayandar to Naigaon and Vasai. The under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Dahisar East–Mira Bhayandar) is intended to extend rapid transit into the city.
Demographics and society
The city has grown rapidly since the 1990s through residential township development, attracting migrants from across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and southern India. It has sizeable Marathi, Gujarati, Marwari, North Indian and Christian communities, along with a long-established Koli fishing population in the western coastal villages. Jain temples, including the Trimandir and several derasars, are a notable cultural feature, and the city is home to a number of Hindu, Muslim and Christian places of worship.
Economy
The local economy combines residential real estate, retail and small-scale industry. Salt manufacturing on the eastern salt pans, fishing in the Uttan–Pali belt, and warehousing along the highway corridor are traditional activities. The city also functions as a dormitory town for Mumbai's services and commercial sectors, with a substantial commuter population.
History
The area historically comprised a cluster of villages in the Salsette region, which came under Portuguese control in the 16th century and passed to the Marathas and subsequently the British in the 18th century. After Indian independence, the villages of Mira and Bhayandar developed as small settlements within Thane district. Urbanisation accelerated after the extension of the suburban railway and the construction of large housing colonies on Mira Road from the 1980s onward, leading to the merger of the twin areas under a single municipal council and, later, a corporation.
