Background
Public theatre in Kolkata grew rapidly during the second half of the nineteenth century, with venues such as the Star Theatre, Great National Theatre and Classic Theatre giving stage to Bengali drama. The Minerva Theatre emerged within this milieu and became one of the principal proscenium playhouses of the city, hosting both classical Bengali plays and adaptations of European works.
History
The Minerva Theatre was founded in 1893 on Beadon Street, which was then a thriving hub of Bengali theatrical activity. In its early decades, the venue staged productions associated with several leading figures of the Bengali stage. The actor-manager Girish Chandra Ghosh, often regarded as the father of modern Bengali theatre, was associated with productions at the Minerva, as were other prominent dramatists and performers of the era.
Over the twentieth century, the theatre underwent multiple changes in management and faced periodic damage from fire, a recurring hazard for the wooden playhouses of north Calcutta. It was rebuilt and reopened on more than one occasion. During the latter part of the century, like several other historic playhouses in the area, the Minerva was used for film exhibition in addition to live performances.
In the twenty-first century, the Government of West Bengal undertook initiatives to restore and revive the Minerva as a working public theatre. A repertory company associated with the venue was set up to stage regular productions, and the auditorium was renovated to support contemporary stagecraft.
Significance
The Minerva is considered an important landmark in the history of Bengali theatre. Along with the Star Theatre and the Classic Theatre, it represents the era when Beadon Street and Cornwallis Street formed the nucleus of commercial Bengali drama. Its association with Girish Chandra Ghosh and other pioneers links it to the formative phase of modern Indian theatre, and its continued operation makes it one of the few nineteenth-century playhouses in India still in active use.
