Background

Mindtree was established in 1999 by a group of ten technology professionals, including Ashok Soota, who had earlier led Wipro's IT business, and Subroto Bagchi, along with Krishnakumar Natarajan, N. S. Parthasarathy, and Rostow Ravanan, among others. The company set out to combine IT services with engineering R&D capabilities, positioning itself between the large Indian IT majors and niche specialists.

Through the 2000s, Mindtree grew its delivery footprint across India and built a global client base in the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific. The firm was known for an emphasis on company culture and employee engagement, an aspect frequently highlighted in business writing by co-founder Subroto Bagchi.

History and timeline

  • 1999: Mindtree Consulting incorporated in Bengaluru.
  • 2007: Initial public offering on Indian stock exchanges; the issue was significantly oversubscribed.
  • 2009: Acquired Aztecsoft, expanding its product engineering services capability.
  • 2010s: Shifted focus toward digital services, cloud, data analytics, and customer experience platforms; became a partner for several global hyperscalers.
  • 2016: Krishnakumar Natarajan moved to the role of executive chairman; Rostow Ravanan was appointed CEO.
  • 2019: Larsen & Toubro acquired a controlling stake in Mindtree following an open offer, in what was widely reported as the first hostile takeover in the Indian IT services industry. The original promoter group, including Soota (who had earlier exited to start Happiest Minds) and Bagchi, opposed the takeover. After the acquisition, A. M. Naik became non-executive chairman and Debashis Chatterjee was appointed CEO.
  • 2022: Boards of Mindtree and L&T Infotech approved a merger; the combined entity began operating as LTIMindtree in November 2022.

Leadership

Notable leaders associated with Mindtree included:

  • Ashok Soota – co-founder and first chairman; later founded Happiest Minds.
  • Subroto Bagchi – co-founder, chairman, and author known for writings on Indian entrepreneurship and management.
  • Krishnakumar Natarajan – co-founder, former CEO and executive chairman.
  • N. S. Parthasarathy – co-founder and former executive vice chairman.
  • Rostow Ravanan – co-founder and former CEO.
  • A. M. Naik – non-executive chairman after the L&T takeover.
  • Debashis Chatterjee – CEO from 2019, who later became CEO of LTIMindtree.

Significance

Mindtree was one of the prominent mid-tier Indian IT services firms during the 2000s and 2010s, often cited alongside companies such as Mphasis, Hexaware, and Persistent Systems. Its 2007 IPO drew attention for being one of the most oversubscribed Indian tech offerings of that period. The 2019 acquisition by Larsen & Toubro is studied as a landmark transaction in Indian corporate history for being executed against the wishes of the founding promoter group, and the subsequent 2022 merger created one of India's larger IT services firms by revenue.
