Background
Mika Singh was born into a Sikh family with deep roots in Punjabi devotional and folk music. His father, Ajmer Singh Mehndi, was a teacher of religious music, and several of his siblings, most prominently Daler Mehndi, pursued professional music careers. Mika trained in classical and devotional singing from an early age before moving into popular music.
He began performing publicly while still in his teens and gradually built a base in the Punjabi pop scene of the 1990s, a period when bhangra-influenced pop was gaining mainstream visibility in India through artists such as Daler Mehndi, Sukhbir, and Jasbir Jassi.
Career
Early work in Punjabi pop
Mika's debut studio album Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag was released in the late 1990s and helped establish him as a solo artist. He continued to release Punjabi and Hindi non-film albums while gradually moving into film playback work.
Bollywood playback
From the mid-2000s onwards, Mika became a regular voice for upbeat dance and item numbers in Hindi cinema. Songs that contributed to his popularity in Bollywood include Ganpat from Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), Mauja Hi Mauja from Jab We Met (2007), Dhanno from Housefull (2010), Subah Hone Na De from Desi Boyz (2011), Bas Ek King from Singham (2011), and Aaj Ki Party from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), among others. He has collaborated with most leading Hindi film composers of his era, including Pritam, Sajid–Wajid, Himesh Reshammiya, and Vishal–Shekhar.
Live performance and tours
Mika is recognised as one of India's busiest live performers, with concert appearances across India, the Gulf, North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Southeast Asia. His stage shows draw heavily on bhangra rhythms and high-energy choreography, and he has performed at college festivals, weddings, corporate events, and large public concerts.
Television and reality shows
Mika has appeared as a judge and mentor on several Indian music reality shows, including formats centred on Punjabi and Hindi pop singing. He has also participated in non-musical reality television, including the celebrity reality show Bigg Boss.
Business ventures
He owns Music & Sound (M&S), a music label and event management company, through which he releases independent singles and manages live concerts. He has also been involved in producing music videos and developing other artists.
Style and reception
Critics and listeners have generally identified Mika's voice with party anthems and dance tracks rather than romantic ballads. His delivery, characterised by a robust, slightly nasal timbre and Punjabi-inflected pronunciation, has made him a frequent choice for songs requiring high tempo and crowd appeal. Within the Punjabi music ecosystem, he is seen as part of the generation of artists who carried bhangra-pop into mainstream Bollywood soundtracks.
Awards and recognition
Mika Singh has received nominations and awards at various Indian film and music ceremonies for his playback work, particularly for dance numbers in mainstream Hindi films. He has also been recognised at Punjabi music award functions for his contributions to the industry.
