Overview

Mehbooba Mufti Sayed (born 22 May 1959) is an Indian politician and leader of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP). She served as the 9th Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018, and was the first woman to hold the office.

As Chief Minister, Mufti led a coalition government formed jointly by the PDP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The coalition was described by the Indian National Congress as a "Himalayan blunder". She resigned in June 2018 after the BJP withdrew its support from the coalition.

Before becoming Chief Minister, Mufti served as the President of the PDP and was a member of the Indian Parliament, representing Anantnag in the 16th Lok Sabha. She had earlier represented the same constituency in the 14th Lok Sabha (2004–2009). She has also served as Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

Following the revocation of Article 370 of the Constitution in August 2019, Mufti was initially detained without charges and was subsequently held under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act.
