Background

The college was established as part of an effort by the Government of Jharkhand to expand tertiary medical education and healthcare access in the state. Palamu, historically a part of the Chota Nagpur region, has long been classified as an aspirational district, and the establishment of a medical college in the area was intended to address shortfalls in specialist medical care and to create local pathways into the medical profession.

The college is named in honour of Medini Rai, who ruled Palamu in the mid-17th century and is associated with the construction works around the Palamu Forts near Betla. His name continues to be used in regional public institutions in Palamu.

Academics

The institution conducts the MBBS programme. Admission to the undergraduate course is through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), with seats allotted under state and all-India quotas as per the regulations of the National Medical Commission (NMC). Like other government medical colleges in Jharkhand, it functions under the administrative control of the Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, Government of Jharkhand.

Hospital and services

The attached teaching hospital provides outpatient and inpatient services across core clinical departments such as general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and allied specialities. The hospital serves as a referral centre for primary and community health facilities in Palamu and neighbouring districts.

Significance

The college is among the newer government medical colleges established in Jharkhand to reduce regional disparity in medical education. Along with similar institutions in Hazaribagh, Dumka and Koderma, it forms part of the state's network of regional medical colleges intended to complement the older Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College in Jamshedpur.
