Background
The restaurant takes its name from the Mavalli locality of Bengaluru, near the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, where its flagship branch is situated. It was started by brothers of the Maiya family, who belonged to the Shivalli Brahmin community traditionally associated with vegetarian cooking in the Udupi region. From a modest tiffin room serving idli, dosa, coffee and other breakfast items, the establishment grew into a full-fledged restaurant offering a multi-course meal known locally as the "MTR meals".
History
MTR began as a small eatery in the first half of the twentieth century, expanding gradually as Bengaluru itself grew. During the Emergency period of the mid-1970s, when government price controls on restaurant food made operations difficult, MTR temporarily diversified into packaged food products. This diversification eventually led to the creation of a separate ready-to-eat and instant-mix foods business, known as MTR Foods, which functions independently of the restaurant. The restaurant business itself continued to be run by branches of the Maiya family.
Over the decades, additional outlets were opened in various parts of Bengaluru and at the Kempegowda International Airport. The flagship Lalbagh Road branch, however, remains the most visited and is closely associated with the restaurant's reputation.
Cuisine and reputation
MTR is credited within Bengaluru's culinary lore with popularising several South Indian dishes, including the rava idli, which the restaurant claims was developed at its kitchens during the Second World War when rice was in short supply. Standard menu items include idli-vada, masala dosa, khara bath, kesari bath, bisi bele bath, chow chow bath, filter coffee and a traditional thali-style meal. The restaurant is known for its set service style, fixed menu at certain hours, and emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and traditional preparation methods.
Significance
MTR is frequently cited in writing on Bengaluru's social history as a marker of the city's pre-liberalisation character and as a representative of the Udupi vegetarian restaurant tradition that spread across southern India during the twentieth century. It has been visited by political leaders, writers and film personalities, and is often included in heritage food walks and travel guides covering Karnataka.
