Overview
Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) is a Central University located in the city of Hyderabad in the Indian state of Telangana. The institution is named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who served as India's first Minister of Education, was a freedom fighter during India's struggle for independence, and a noted scholar of Islam and Urdu literature.
The university was established with a focus on the promotion of higher education through the Urdu medium. For a considerable period, it remained the only Urdu-medium university in India. This position changed with the establishment of the Dr. Abdul Haq Urdu University in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, in 2016.
As a Central University, MANUU draws students from various parts of the country and contributes to academic activity associated with the Urdu language. Its naming after Maulana Azad reflects his enduring association with educational policy in independent India and with Urdu literary scholarship.
