Background

The building dates from the colonial period and was originally constructed as accommodation associated with the British military presence in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore. Over the decades it transitioned from its original use to that of a public hotel, retaining elements of its early twentieth century architecture. Following the formation of Kerala in 1956 and the subsequent expansion of state-run tourism infrastructure, the property came under the management of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.

Location and surroundings

The hotel stands on Mascot Square, a prominent road junction in central Thiruvananthapuram. The area lies within easy reach of several administrative and cultural landmarks of the city, including the Kerala Government Secretariat, the Napier Museum, the Kanakakkunnu Palace, and the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple precincts. The Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station and the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport are both within the city limits.

Operations

As a KTDC property, the Mascot Hotel functions within the corporation's network of hotels, resorts and tourist facilities spread across Kerala. It offers conventional hotel services including guest rooms, restaurants, banquet and conference facilities, and is frequently used as a venue for official functions and conferences in the state capital.

Significance

The hotel is considered a recognisable civic landmark in Thiruvananthapuram, with the surrounding junction taking its name from the property. Its long-standing operation and architectural character contribute to its identification with the heritage hospitality segment of Kerala's tourism industry.
