Mark Edward Waugh (born 2 June 1965) is an Australian cricket commentator and former international cricketer. He represented Australia in Test cricket from early 1991 to late 2002, having earlier made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 1988. Waugh was a member of the Australian side that won the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

Background and family

Mark Waugh is the younger twin of fellow Australian cricketer Steve Waugh, born a few minutes after his brother. Another of his brothers, Dean Waugh, is also a cricketer and has played first-class and List A cricket in Australia for New South Wales. His nephew, Steve Waugh's son Austin Waugh, was selected in the Australian under-19 team.

Playing career

Waugh's international career spanned both limited-overs and Test formats. After making his ODI debut for Australia in 1988, he went on to play Test cricket from early 1991 until late 2002. During this period he was part of the Australian squad that lifted the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

After retirement

Following his playing career, Waugh served as a national selector for Australian cricket. He held the position until August 2018. On 15 May 2018, he announced that he would step down from selector duties to take up a television commentating role with Fox Sports.

Significance

As a leading batsman of the 1990s and early 2000s, Waugh was part of one of the most successful periods in Australian cricket, including a World Cup-winning campaign. His later roles as national selector and commentator have kept him associated with the Australian cricketing establishment.
