Geography
Marehra lies in the doab region of western Uttar Pradesh, in the plains between the Ganga and Yamuna river systems. It is connected by road to Etah, the district headquarters, as well as to Aligarh and Kasganj, with the nearest railway connections served by stations on routes through the region.
Administration
As a nagar panchayat, the town is administered by an elected board headed by a chairperson. For revenue and general administration, Marehra functions as one of the tehsils of Etah district. The district itself falls under the Aligarh division of Uttar Pradesh.
Religious and cultural significance
Marehra is widely associated with the Khanqah Barkatiyya, a centre of the Qadiri Sufi order founded by descendants of Shah Barkatullah Marehrawi, a Sufi figure of the early eighteenth century. The dargahs and khanqah at Marehra continue to attract pilgrims from across India and South Asia, particularly during the annual urs commemorations of the saints buried there.
The town is also known as the birthplace of Ahmed Raza Khan's spiritual mentor Shah Aal-e-Rasool Marehrawi, a leading nineteenth-century Sufi scholar of the Qadiri-Barkatiyya silsila. This association has given Marehra a prominent place in the history of the Barelvi movement within South Asian Sunni Islam.
Demographics and economy
The population of Marehra is composed of both Hindu and Muslim communities, with Hindi and Urdu in common use. The local economy is largely based on agriculture, small-scale trade, and services associated with the surrounding rural hinterland, alongside activity generated by religious tourism to the shrines.
