Geography
Mansa lies on the plains of southern Punjab, in a flat, alluvial tract used predominantly for cultivation. The district is bordered by Bathinda to the west, Barnala and Sangrur to the north, and the Haryana districts of Sirsa and Fatehabad to the south. The terrain is largely treeless agricultural land with canal irrigation drawn from the Bhakra system, supporting cotton, wheat, and paddy cultivation.
Administration
Mansa city functions as the headquarters of Mansa district, which was carved out of Bathinda district on 13 April 1992. The district comprises tehsils including Mansa, Budhlada, and Sardulgarh. Civic administration within the city is handled by the Mansa Municipal Council, while law and order falls under the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mansa, within the Punjab Police framework. The city is part of the Bathinda Lok Sabha constituency and has its own Mansa Vidhan Sabha constituency in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.
Economy
The economy of Mansa is centred on agriculture and agro-based trade. The city hosts one of the larger regulated grain and cotton mandis in Punjab, handling produce from across the surrounding rural belt. Cotton ginning and pressing, rice shelling, and trade in wheat and oilseeds are the principal commercial activities. Cooperative banking, agricultural credit societies, and branches of nationalised banks support the farming economy.
Transport
Mansa is connected by rail and road to other parts of Punjab and neighbouring Haryana. Mansa railway station lies on the Jakhal–Bathinda line of Northern Railway, providing direct services to Bathinda, Jakhal, Patiala, and onward to Delhi. State highways link the city to Bathinda, Barnala, Sardulgarh, and Sirsa. The nearest major airport is at Bathinda.
Culture
The population is largely Punjabi-speaking, with a strong Sikh majority alongside Hindu communities. Local culture reflects Malwai traditions, including folk forms such as jhumar and boliyan, and the cuisine common to the cotton belt. Religious life centres on neighbourhood gurdwaras and Hindu temples within the city.
Education
Mansa has government and private schools affiliated with the Punjab School Education Board and the Central Board of Secondary Education. Higher education is offered through degree colleges affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala, including a government college in the city. Polytechnic and industrial training institutes serve technical education needs in the district.
