Manish Kaushik

Manish Kaushik is an Indian amateur boxer from Haryana who competes in the lightweight category. He represented India at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and has won medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Boxing Championships.

Background

Kaushik hails from Bhiwani district in Haryana, a region long associated with Indian amateur boxing and home to several Olympic boxers. He took up boxing in his youth and was later inducted into the Indian Army, training under the Services Sports Control Board, which has produced a number of India's leading boxers.

Career

2018 Commonwealth Games

Kaushik came into prominence in the run-up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, when he challenged the selection of Vikas Krishan and was eventually included in the Indian squad in the lightweight (60 kg) category, although Krishan ultimately competed in a different weight class. He represented India at the Games but did not medal on that occasion.

2018 Asian Games and continental events

He featured in Indian squads at major continental tournaments in the late 2010s, gaining experience against top Asian opponents in the 60 kg division.

2018 World Championships

Kaushik was part of the Indian contingent at the AIBA Men's World Boxing Championships, competing in the lightweight category.

2018 Asian Championships

He won a bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in the 60 kg category, marking one of his early major international podium finishes.

2018 Commonwealth Games – silver medal

At the Commonwealth Games, Kaushik claimed a silver medal in the lightweight division, losing in the final to Australian boxer Harry Garside.

2020 Tokyo Olympics

Kaushik qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021) by reaching the semi-finals of the Asia & Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Amman, Jordan. He competed in the men's lightweight (63 kg) event in Tokyo, where he was eliminated in the early rounds.

Style and significance

Kaushik is known as an aggressive, pressure-style boxer with a strong work rate, traits associated with the Bhiwani school of Indian boxing. His career reflects the continued prominence of Haryana and the Services in producing elite Indian male boxers in the post-Vijender Singh era.
