The university was established to take over the affiliating and academic functions for these colleges and to develop postgraduate teaching and research programmes on its main campus at Mangalagangothri, situated on the outskirts of Mangaluru city near Konaje.

The main campus at Mangalagangothri houses the postgraduate departments, central library, administrative offices and research centres.
