It was established by the Government of Karnataka to expand higher education access in the Mandya district and surrounding regions of the Old Mysore area, taking over functions previously discharged by affiliated colleges under the University of Mysore.

Background

Mandya district lies in the southern part of Karnataka, between Mysuru and Bengaluru, and has historically been served in higher education by colleges affiliated to the University of Mysore. The creation of a separate university for Mandya was part of a broader policy in Karnataka to bifurcate large affiliating universities and create new regional universities to improve administrative reach, research focus, and student support.
