Background
Mandira Bedi was born in Kolkata into a Punjabi family and grew up in New Delhi. She studied at the Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan before moving to Mumbai for her undergraduate education at St. Xavier's College, where she completed a degree in English. She trained in classical dance during her schooling years, which later influenced her early film and television work.
Career
Early film and television
Bedi made her film debut in Yash Chopra's Lamhe (1991), in which she played a small role. Her career breakthrough came with the Doordarshan television serial Shanti, created by Aziz Mirza and produced by Shah Rukh Khan's banner, which began airing in 1994. The show is generally considered India's first daily soap, and Bedi's portrayal of the title character, a young journalist, made her a household name.
She subsequently appeared in films such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) in a supporting role, and continued to work in Hindi and Tamil films through the late 1990s and 2000s.
Cricket presenting
Bedi gained renewed national prominence as a presenter for Sony Max during the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, hosted from South Africa. Her informal, lifestyle-driven style of anchoring cricket coverage was a significant departure from the technical commentary format and attracted both wide audiences and debate. She continued to anchor cricket programming during subsequent ICC World Cups in 2007 and 2011, as well as Indian Premier League broadcasts and ICC Champions Trophy events.
Theatre, reality television and other work
Bedi has performed on stage in productions including The Vagina Monologues, directed by Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal. She has participated in and hosted several reality television shows on Indian channels, including Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Khatron Ke Khiladi. She also launched a sari and ethnic-wear label under her own name.

Significance
Bedi's career is often cited in discussions of two distinct shifts in Indian popular media: the rise of the daily soap format on Indian television in the mid-1990s, and the transformation of cricket broadcasting into a lifestyle and entertainment property in the 2000s. As one of the first prominent female non-expert anchors during major cricket tournaments on Indian television, her work influenced subsequent presentation styles on sports channels.
