Geography
Malout lies in the south-western plains of Punjab, in the cotton-growing belt of the Malwa region. The surrounding countryside is largely flat alluvial land irrigated by canals drawn from the Sirhind and Rajasthan canal systems. The town sits broadly between Sri Muktsar Sahib to the north and Abohar to the south-west, and is relatively close to the Punjab–Rajasthan and Punjab–Haryana borders.
Administration
Civic functions in the town are handled by the Municipal Council, Malout, which is responsible for sanitation, water supply, street lighting, local roads and other urban services. Malout tehsil, of which the town is the headquarters, is one of the administrative subdivisions of Sri Muktsar Sahib district. For purposes of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, the town lies within the Malout assembly constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Castes; for the Lok Sabha it falls under the Firozpur parliamentary constituency.
Transport
Malout is well connected by road and rail. National Highway 7 (formerly NH-15), which runs through south-western Punjab linking Pathankot with Fazilka and onward to Rajasthan, passes through the town, providing road links to Bathinda, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Abohar and Fazilka. Malout railway station, on the Northern Railway, lies on the Bathinda–Fazilka line and provides connections to other towns in the region.
Economy
The economy of Malout is closely tied to agriculture. The surrounding tehsil produces cotton, wheat, paddy and kinnow (mandarin orange), and the town serves as a market and processing centre for these crops. Cotton ginning and pressing units, rice shellers, and grain trading are significant local activities, and the regulated grain market (mandi) handles produce from a wide rural catchment.
Education
Malout hosts several educational institutions serving the surrounding rural area, including government and private schools affiliated to the Punjab School Education Board and the Central Board of Secondary Education, along with degree colleges and technical institutes. The town is also associated with engineering and management education in the district through institutions located in and around it.
Demographics and culture
The population of Malout is predominantly Punjabi-speaking, with Sikhs and Hindus forming the major religious communities. Cultural life reflects the broader traditions of the Malwa region, with observance of Sikh festivals such as Gurpurabs and Vaisakhi, along with Hindu festivals including Diwali and Holi. Gurdwaras and temples within the town serve as important community centres.
