Overview
Malegaon is a city and municipal corporation in the Nashik district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Located in the northern part of the district, it lies on the banks of the Girna river and is one of the largest urban centres in north Maharashtra. The city is widely known for its powerloom textile industry and for a distinctive local film-making subculture often referred to as "Malegaon cinema".

Geography
Malegaon is situated in the Girna river valley, in the northern part of Nashik district, on the historical route between Nashik and Dhule. The terrain falls within the Deccan plateau and the surrounding region is largely agricultural, with onion, cotton, and pomegranate cultivation common in adjoining talukas. The Girna and Mosam rivers meet near the city, and the area lies in a semi-arid climatic belt with hot summers and a monsoon-dependent rainfall pattern.
Background and history
Malegaon developed historically as a market town along the trade corridor connecting the Tapti basin in Khandesh with the Godavari basin around Nashik. A fort built in the area, associated with the Holkar period, contributed to its early prominence. After Indian independence, the town grew rapidly as artisans and weavers settled in the area, transforming it into a major centre of handloom and later powerloom weaving. Its textile economy is closely associated with the production of low- and medium-cost cotton fabrics, sarees, and lungis distributed across India.

Civic administration is handled by the Malegaon Municipal Corporation, which is responsible for urban services such as water supply, sanitation, roads, and public health within the city limits. Malegaon is also the headquarters of Malegaon taluka and is represented in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly through the Malegaon Central and Malegaon Outer (Bahir) constituencies. The economy of Malegaon is dominated by the powerloom textile sector, which employs a large share of the urban workforce. Thousands of small powerloom units operate within the city, producing grey cloth, dress materials, and made-ups. Allied activities include yarn trading, sizing, dyeing, and transport. Agriculture-based commerce, particularly in onions, grapes, and pomegranates from surrounding rural areas, is also significant, and the nearby Lasalgaon market in the district is one of Asia's largest onion trading hubs.
Culture and society
Malegaon has a religiously and linguistically mixed population, with substantial Marathi-speaking and Urdu-speaking communities. The city's cultural life reflects this composition, with festivals such as Eid, Muharram, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Navratri being widely observed. Local cuisine draws on both Maharashtrian and Mughlai-Deccani traditions.
Malegaon cinema
The city is notable for a homegrown film-making tradition in which low-budget spoofs and parodies of mainstream Bollywood and Hollywood films are produced by local crews for neighbourhood audiences. This phenomenon was brought to wider public attention through the documentary Supermen of Malegaon, which depicts the making of a local spoof of the superhero genre.
Transport
Malegaon lies along National Highway 60 (formerly part of NH 3), connecting Mumbai and Nashik with Dhule and Madhya Pradesh. State highways link the city to Manmad, Chalisgaon, and other regional centres. The nearest major railway junction is at Manmad, while the closest airport with scheduled commercial services is in Nashik.
Education
The city hosts a range of schools and colleges affiliated with state boards and with universities such as Savitribai Phule Pune University and the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education. Institutions in Malegaon offer programmes in arts, commerce, science, education, and technical disciplines, serving students from the city and surrounding talukas.
