Background
Kerala has historically been a cement-deficit state, relying heavily on supplies from neighbouring regions. Malabar Cements Limited was set up as part of the state government's effort to develop indigenous cement production capacity, taking advantage of limestone deposits available in the Walayar region of Palakkad district, close to the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. The plant's location was chosen for its proximity to raw material sources as well as rail and road connectivity through the Palakkad Gap.
Operations
The company's principal manufacturing facility is located at Walayar in Palakkad district. The plant integrates limestone mining with clinker and cement production. In addition to the main factory, the company has operated grinding and packing facilities to extend distribution reach within Kerala. Malabar Cements supplies cement to government construction projects, public works contracts, and the open retail market under its own brand.
Products
- Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) – produced in standard grades for general construction.
- Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) – manufactured by blending clinker with pozzolanic materials, suited to coastal and humid conditions prevalent in Kerala.
Significance
As one of the few cement manufacturers headquartered in Kerala, Malabar Cements occupies a strategic position in the state's industrial sector. It contributes to local employment in the Palakkad region, supports state infrastructure programmes, and serves as a price reference point in the regional cement market. The company is among the industrial undertakings administered through the Government of Kerala's Industries Department.
