Overview
Mainpuri is a city and municipal board in the Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It serves as the administrative headquarters of the eponymous district, which falls under the Agra division. The city lies in the Doab region between the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, and has historically been an agricultural and trading centre of western Uttar Pradesh.

Geography
Mainpuri is situated on the plains of the Doab in western Uttar Pradesh. The terrain is flat and alluvial, supporting intensive agriculture. The Isan and Sengar rivers flow through parts of the district. The city is connected by road and rail to Etawah, Agra, Farrukhabad and Kanpur.
Administration
Mainpuri functions as the district headquarters and houses the offices of the District Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police, and other district-level departments. Civic administration within the city is handled by the Mainpuri Municipal Board (Nagar Palika Parishad). The city falls within the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency, which has historically been associated with the Samajwadi Party and was long held by Mulayam Singh Yadav.
History
Mainpuri has a long historical presence in the Doab region. In the medieval period it was associated with the Chauhan Rajputs, and later came under the Mughal administration as a part of the suba of Agra. Under British rule it was organised as a district of the North-Western Provinces, and subsequently of the United Provinces. The town saw participation in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, with local figures resisting the East India Company's authority.
Economy
The economy of Mainpuri is largely agrarian, with wheat, paddy, bajra, mustard and potatoes among the principal crops. The city is known for its traditional craft of tarkashi, a form of inlay work in which fine brass wire is set into seasoned shisham wood to form decorative patterns. This craft has been recognised as a distinctive handicraft of the region.
Culture
Mainpuri's cultural life reflects the broader traditions of the Braj and Doab regions. Hindi and the local Braj Bhasha dialect are widely spoken. Festivals such as Holi, Diwali, Dussehra, Eid and Janmashtami are observed. The town has temples, mosques and old havelis that reflect its layered history.
Transport
Mainpuri is served by Mainpuri railway station on the Indian Railways network. National and state highways link the city to Etawah, Agra, Bhongaon and Farrukhabad. Road transport is operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation along with private operators.
Education
The city hosts a range of government and private schools affiliated to the Uttar Pradesh Board, CBSE and ICSE, along with degree colleges affiliated to Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra. Technical and teacher-training institutions also operate in the district.
