Maheshtala is a city and municipality in the South 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Situated on the southern bank of the Hooghly River, it forms part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area and lies immediately to the south-west of Kolkata. The town is known for its dense population, its garment manufacturing clusters, and its proximity to the Budge Budge industrial belt.

Geography
Maheshtala lies along the southern bank of the Hooghly, forming a continuous urban stretch with the neighbouring towns of Budge Budge to the south-west and Kolkata to the north-east. The terrain is flat alluvial plain typical of the lower Ganges delta. The Budge Budge branch line of the Eastern Railway runs through the area, connecting it with Sealdah.
Civic administration
The town is administered by the Maheshtala Municipality, which is divided into wards covering localities such as Santoshpur, Akra, Rabindra Nagar, Chatta, Gangadharpur and Nungi. The municipality is responsible for local services including water supply, sanitation, road maintenance and primary health care.
Demographics
Maheshtala is among the more populous municipalities in West Bengal. The population is religiously and linguistically mixed, with significant Bengali Hindu, Bengali Muslim, and Urdu-speaking communities. The literacy rate is broadly comparable with the average for urban West Bengal.
Economy
The economy of Maheshtala is closely linked to small and medium-scale manufacturing. The town is a major centre for ready-made garment production, with thousands of small tailoring units and workshops operating in localities such as Akra, Santoshpur and Chatta. A planned Hosiery Park has been promoted by the state government to consolidate the garment industry. Other activities include leather goods, light engineering, retail trade, and services connected with the wider Kolkata economy.
Transport
Maheshtala is served by Akra and Santoshpur railway stations on the Sealdah–Budge Budge line of the Eastern Railway. State and municipal roads connect the town with Kolkata via Taratala and Behala, and with Budge Budge to the south. Buses, auto-rickshaws and shared taxis are the principal modes of intra-urban transport.
Education
The town has a network of Bengali- and English-medium schools affiliated with the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, along with madrasahs and primary institutions. Higher education is generally pursued in colleges across the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.
Politics
Maheshtala forms its own Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) constituency and is part of the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency. The area has historically supported Left Front parties and, in more recent years, the All India Trinamool Congress.
