Mahbubnagar, also spelt Mahabubnagar, is a city in the southern part of the Indian state of Telangana. It is the headquarters of Mahabubnagar district and of Mahabubnagar mandal, and is one of the principal urban centres of the region historically known as Palamuru.

Etymology and names
The city was earlier known as Palamuru, a name still widely used in local usage and in the regional identity of the surrounding district. It was renamed Mahbubnagar in honour of Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, during whose reign the change came into effect. The older name Rukmammapeta is also recorded in historical references to the settlement.
Geography
Mahbubnagar lies on the Deccan plateau in southern Telangana, in a largely semi-arid agricultural belt drained by tributaries of the Krishna river. The terrain is characterised by rocky outcrops, granite formations and seasonal streams. The city is connected by road and rail to Hyderabad to the north and to Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh to the south, lying along the Hyderabad–Bangalore corridor.
History
The region around Mahbubnagar has a long settlement history and has been associated with several Deccan dynasties, including the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas and the Vijayanagara empire. It later came under the Qutb Shahis of Golconda and subsequently formed part of the Asaf Jahi (Nizam) dominions of Hyderabad State.
Under the Nizams, the area was administered as part of the Hyderabad princely state until its accession to the Indian Union in 1948 following Operation Polo. After the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, Mahbubnagar district became part of Andhra Pradesh. With the formation of the new state of Telangana on 2 June 2014, the city and its district were transferred to Telangana. Subsequent administrative reorganisation in the state in 2016 resulted in the original Mahabubnagar district being divided into smaller districts, with Mahbubnagar continuing as the headquarters of the residual Mahabubnagar district.
Civic administration
Urban governance is handled by the Mahbubnagar Municipality, which is responsible for civic services within the city limits. The city also serves as the seat of the district collectorate, district court and other district-level offices of the Government of Telangana.
Economy
The local economy is anchored in agriculture and agro-based trade, with the city functioning as a market town for the surrounding rural areas. Crops grown in the district include paddy, jowar, castor, groundnut and cotton. Mahbubnagar is also known historically for the migrant labour workforce associated with the Palamuru region, which has been a significant subject in studies of internal migration in India. Small-scale industry, retail trade, transport and government services contribute to urban employment.
Transport
Mahbubnagar is served by the Mahbubnagar railway station on the South Central Railway, lying on the line connecting Secunderabad with Dhone and onward to southern India. National Highway 44 (the north–south corridor between Srinagar and Kanyakumari) passes through the district, providing road connectivity to Hyderabad and Kurnool. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation operates bus services to towns within the state and to neighbouring states.
Culture and landmarks
The district around Mahbubnagar contains several notable cultural and natural sites, including the Pillalamarri, a centuries-old great banyan tree that is among the most prominent landmarks of the region. Other heritage sites in the wider district include Koilkonda Fort, Gadwal Fort and the temples at Alampur on the banks of the Tungabhadra. Telugu is the dominant language, with Urdu also widely spoken, reflecting the city's history under the Nizams.
Education
Mahbubnagar hosts a range of government and private schools, junior colleges and degree colleges affiliated to universities in Telangana. The city has a government medical college and engineering institutions that serve students from the surrounding districts.
