Background
The university was conceived as a dedicated affiliating and regulatory body for AYUSH education in Uttar Pradesh. Prior to its creation, AYUSH colleges in the state were affiliated with multiple general universities, which led to differences in academic regulation, syllabi, and examinations across the various streams. The new university was established to consolidate the supervision of degree-level AYUSH instruction under one authority and to align curricula with the standards prescribed by the central regulatory commissions for Indian medicine and homoeopathy.
Gorakhpur was chosen for the university owing to its long association with the Nath sampradaya and the cultural and religious legacy of Guru Gorakhnath, after whom the institution is named. The city is also a regional centre for higher education in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Academic scope
The university is intended to serve as the affiliating university for government and private AYUSH colleges in Uttar Pradesh. Its academic remit covers:
- Bachelor's degree programmes such as BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery), BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery), BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery), and degree courses in Yoga and Naturopathy.
- Postgraduate and research programmes in the AYUSH disciplines.
- Standardisation of curricula, examinations, and clinical training across affiliated colleges.
- Promotion of research in traditional Indian systems of medicine.
Significance
As the first dedicated AYUSH university in Uttar Pradesh, the institution is significant in the broader policy push by the central and state governments to mainstream traditional systems of medicine alongside modern allopathic healthcare. Centralising AYUSH education under a single university is expected to streamline regulation, improve teaching standards, and increase opportunities for inter-disciplinary research linking Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy.
