Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, commonly known as MJP Rohilkhand University or Rohilkhand University, is a state public university located in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India. It serves as the principal affiliating university for higher education across the Rohilkhand region of western Uttar Pradesh and runs its own teaching departments on its campus in Bareilly.

Background

The university is named after the nineteenth-century social reformer Jyotirao Phule, who is widely regarded as a pioneering figure in the campaign against caste discrimination and for the education of women and underprivileged communities in India. The renaming of the institution was intended to honour his contribution to social reform and education.

Bareilly, where the university is situated, is the principal city of the Rohilkhand region, a historical area in the Gangetic plains of western Uttar Pradesh. The university draws its name from this region and acts as a focal point for higher education for several adjoining districts.
