Background
Nalgonda district, in which the university is situated, lies in the southern part of Telangana. Before the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the institution served students drawn primarily from the Telugu-speaking districts of the erstwhile state. Following the formation of Telangana on 2 June 2014, the university came under the higher education administration of the new state government.
As a state public university, Mahatma Gandhi University functions within the framework laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India and the Telangana State Council of Higher Education. It offers postgraduate programmes and affiliates colleges across its jurisdiction, providing instruction in the arts, sciences, commerce, and professional disciplines.
Academics and affiliation
The university operates through teaching departments on its campus and a network of affiliated degree colleges in the region. Programmes are typically offered at the undergraduate level through affiliated colleges and at the postgraduate and research levels on the main campus. Examinations, syllabi, and the conferment of degrees fall within the university's responsibilities.
Significance
The establishment of a dedicated university in Nalgonda was intended to decentralise higher education in Telangana, which had historically been concentrated in Hyderabad and a few other urban centres. By serving as a regional hub, the university plays a role in widening access to graduate and postgraduate study for students from rural and semi-urban backgrounds in southern Telangana.
