The university was founded in the context of the Indian freedom struggle, when leaders associated with the Indian National Congress encouraged the establishment of "national" educational institutions independent of the British colonial system. Varanasi (Kashi), already a long-standing centre of learning in northern India, was chosen as the site for such an institution, and it came to be known initially as Kashi Vidyapith. The institution was later renamed in honour of Mahatma Gandhi, reflecting his association with its founding ideals of self-reliance, indigenous education, and service to the nation.
