Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute

Overview

The Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (MRSAFPI) is a state-run residential training institute in Punjab, India, established to prepare young cadets for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and other commissioned officer training establishments of the Indian Armed Forces. The institute is named after Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire, and forms part of the Government of Punjab's effort to increase the representation of Punjabi youth in the officer cadre of the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Key facts

Name Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute
Abbreviation MRSAFPI
Type Armed forces preparatory institute
Location Mohali, Punjab, India
Operated by Government of Punjab
Purpose Preparation of cadets for the NDA and other officer entry examinations

Background

The institute was set up by the Government of Punjab as a dedicated feeder academy to groom selected candidates for the written examinations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the National Defence Academy and the Naval Academy, as well as the subsequent Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews. It addresses a long-standing concern that, despite Punjab's strong martial tradition, the proportion of officers from the state in the armed forces had been declining.

Cadets typically join the institute after Class 10 and are coached alongside their Class 11 and 12 academic studies, with an integrated programme covering academics, physical training, personality development, current affairs and SSB-oriented preparation. Selection is through a competitive entrance test conducted by the Government of Punjab, followed by a medical examination and interview.

Campus and training

The campus is residential, modelled on the lines of Sainik Schools and Rashtriya Indian Military College, with hostels, classrooms, sports facilities and a parade ground. Training is conducted under the supervision of serving and retired officers of the armed forces, supported by civilian academic faculty.

The curriculum emphasises:

  • Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, aligned with the NDA written syllabus.
  • English language and General Knowledge.
  • Physical fitness, drill, swimming and outdoor activities.
  • Group discussions, lecturettes and other tasks designed for SSB preparation.

Significance

MRSAFPI is one of a small number of state-funded preparatory academies in India aimed specifically at the NDA pipeline, alongside institutions such as the Maharashtra-run Service Preparatory Institute and similar academies operated by other states. Its establishment reflects a policy approach in Punjab of combining academic schooling with structured pre-military training to improve the success rate of state candidates in the NDA and SSB processes.
