Establishing a medical college in Berhampur was intended to extend modern medical education and tertiary healthcare to the southern parts of Odisha, a region that had historically been underserved by such institutions.

The institution offers undergraduate medical education leading to the MBBS degree, along with postgraduate programmes (MD, MS and diploma courses) across major clinical and pre-clinical disciplines. Allied training programmes in nursing and paramedical sciences are also conducted in association with the hospital. Admissions to medical courses are governed by the national entrance examinations and counselling processes applicable to government medical colleges in India.

The attached teaching hospital provides services across departments such as general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, dermatology, psychiatry, radiology, anaesthesiology, pathology, microbiology and community medicine. As a tertiary care centre, it operates outpatient departments, inpatient wards, intensive care units, operation theatres, a casualty and trauma service, and diagnostic facilities including imaging and laboratory services.
Significance
MKCG Medical College is among the principal government medical colleges of Odisha, alongside institutions in Cuttack and Burla, and plays a central role in healthcare delivery, medical education and clinical research in the southern region of the state. The hospital functions as a major referral facility for districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Kandhamal and Boudh, and also receives patients from neighbouring areas of Andhra Pradesh.
Campus and location
The campus is situated in Berhampur, a major urban centre in southern Odisha that is well connected by rail and road. The college and hospital complex includes academic blocks, hostels for students and resident doctors, staff quarters, and the teaching hospital with its various clinical departments and wards.
