Establishment

MSSV was created as a private university by a dedicated state Act passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2013. As a private university constituted by state legislation, it is empowered to award degrees in accordance with the provisions of its founding statute and the regulatory framework governing higher education in India.

Significance

The establishment of MSSV added to the institutional landscape of higher education in central Assam, providing a university based in Nagaon rather than in the older university towns of the state. By taking the name of Srimanta Sankardev, the university also serves as a continuing public commemoration of the saint-reformer's contribution to Assamese society.
