Background and formation

Before 2016, the area now constituting Mahabubabad district was part of the undivided Warangal district. Following the formation of Telangana as a separate state in June 2014, the state government undertook a comprehensive reorganisation of districts, mandals and revenue divisions to bring administration closer to citizens. Under this exercise, several mandals of the erstwhile Warangal district were grouped together to form Mahabubabad district.

Geography

Mahabubabad district lies in the eastern part of Telangana. It shares boundaries with Warangal and Hanamkonda districts to the north, Khammam district to the south and east, and Suryapet district to the west. The terrain is largely undulating, dotted with low hills and forested tracts, and the district is drained by tributaries of the Godavari and Krishna river systems. Agriculture, particularly paddy and cotton cultivation, forms the backbone of the rural economy, supplemented by horticultural crops in irrigated pockets.

Administration

The district is headed by a District Collector and Magistrate, supported by a Superintendent of Police for law and order and a District Forest Officer for forest administration. For revenue purposes, Mahabubabad district is divided into revenue divisions which are further subdivided into mandals, each headed by a Mandal Revenue Officer (Tahsildar). Local self-governance at the village level is exercised through gram panchayats, while urban areas are administered through municipalities and nagar panchayats.

Demography and society

The district has a significant tribal population, with Scheduled Tribe communities, including the Koya and Lambada (Banjara) groups, forming a notable share of the residents. Telugu is the predominant language, with tribal languages and dialects also in use. Several mandals of the district fall under areas covered by tribal welfare and integrated tribal development programmes.

Economy

The economy of Mahabubabad district is predominantly agrarian. Paddy, cotton, maize, chillies and pulses are among the major crops. Forest produce, including tendu leaves and other minor forest products, contributes to the livelihoods of tribal households. The district is connected by road and rail; Mahabubabad town lies on the Kazipet–Vijayawada railway line, providing connectivity to major cities in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Politics

Mahabubabad is the headquarters of the Mahabubabad Lok Sabha constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes. The district also includes assembly constituencies that send members to the Telangana Legislative Assembly.
