Overview

Madurai Medical College is a government medical school in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is attached to the Government Rajaji Hospital, which functions as its principal teaching hospital and provides tertiary care to a large population in the southern part of Tamil Nadu.

The associated hospital, formerly known as Erskine's Hospital, was established in 1842 and became a teaching hospital in 1954. The college is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and is recognised by the World Health Organization.

Government Rajaji Hospital serves as a tertiary-level referral centre for medical college hospitals across southern and central Tamil Nadu. It is among the busiest hospitals in the state, with doctors available across speciality departments at all hours. The hospital is regarded as a centre for various surgical procedures, including open heart and closed heart surgeries as well as valve replacement.

Patient services include a round-the-clock casualty facility, a 24-hour biochemistry laboratory, CT scan and MRI scan facilities, and a Master Health Check-up programme. Tertiary care is also offered under the comprehensive health insurance scheme of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
