Overview
Madhabi Chakraborty (née Mukherjee) is an Indian actress who works primarily in Bengali cinema. She is regarded as one of the most prominent actresses in the history of Bengali films, having featured in several critically acclaimed productions over the course of her career.
She made her on-screen debut as a child in Premendra Mitra's Kankantola Light Railway (1950). Her first leading role came in Tapan Sinha's Tonsil (1956). She was originally credited under her birth name, and was renamed "Madhabi" by filmmaker Mrinal Sen during the making of Baishe Sraban (1960).
Mukherjee received the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the Bengali film Dibratrir Kabya. Her body of work in Bengali cinema has contributed to her standing as a notable figure on the Indian screen.
