Background

Venkataramana came up through the cricketing system in Tamil Nadu, a state with a strong tradition of producing spin bowlers. He earned selection to the senior Tamil Nadu side in the Ranji Trophy, India's premier first-class domestic competition organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Career

As an off-spinner, Venkataramana relied on flight, accuracy and subtle variations in pace and turn, the traditional virtues associated with the off-spin craft in Indian conditions. His domestic performances in the Ranji Trophy earned him a call-up to the Indian national team.

He made his Test debut for India during the late 1980s, joining a generation of Indian spinners who featured in the side during a transitional phase between the era of the famed spin quartet of the 1960s and 1970s and the rise of Anil Kumble in the 1990s. His international career, however, was limited to that solitary Test appearance, after which he continued to play first-class cricket on the domestic circuit.
