Background
Keeravani was born in Kovvur, in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, into a family with deep roots in Telugu cinema. His uncle, V. Vijayendra Prasad, is a noted screenwriter, and his cousin S. S. Rajamouli is among India's most prominent film directors. His younger brother Kalyani Malik (Kalyan Koduri) is also a music composer. Keeravani trained in Carnatic music and assisted senior composers, notably C. Rajamani and K. Chakravarthy, before stepping into independent composition.
Career
Early years
Keeravani made his debut as an independent music director with the Telugu film Manasu Mamatha (1990). He gained early recognition with Kshana Kshanam (1991), directed by Ram Gopal Varma, whose songs and background score became widely popular. The same year, his work in Azaad (Malayalam) marked his entry into other film industries of South India.
Pan-Indian rise
Through the 1990s, Keeravani composed for several successful Telugu films, including Allari Priyudu (1993), Pelli Sandadi (1996) and Annamayya (1997). For Annamayya, a devotional biopic on the saint-composer Tallapaka Annamacharya directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, he received the National Film Award for Best Music Direction. He also achieved success in Tamil cinema, where he was credited as Maragathamani, with films such as Kshatriyan (1990) and Pudhiya Mannargal.
In Hindi cinema, where he is credited as M. M. Kreem, his breakthrough came with Criminal (1995), featuring the song "Tu Mile Dil Khile". He went on to compose for films including Zakhm (1998), Jism (2003), Paheli (2005) and Rog (2005). The track "Gali Mein Aaj Chand Nikla" from Zakhm remains particularly well known.
Collaboration with S. S. Rajamouli
Keeravani has scored every feature film directed by his cousin S. S. Rajamouli. The collaboration began with Student No. 1 (2001) and continued through Simhadri (2003), Sye (2004), Chatrapathi (2005), Vikramarkudu (2006), Yamadonga (2007), Magadheera (2009), Maryada Ramanna (2010), Eega (2012), Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) and RRR (2022).
RRR and international recognition
For the song "Naatu Naatu" from RRR, written by Chandrabose and picturised on N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, Keeravani won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song – Motion Picture and the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards (2023), making it the first Indian film song to win the Oscar in that category. He shared the Academy Award with lyricist Chandrabose.
Style and craft
Keeravani's music is characterised by a strong base in Indian classical and folk traditions, melodic richness, and the integration of full orchestral arrangements with regional instruments. He is also known to write lyrics for several of his songs, often under his own name, and occasionally provides playback vocals. His background scores for the Baahubali films and RRR are notable for their thematic motifs and use of choral and orchestral textures.
