At Tokyo, she became only the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh (2008) and Mary Kom (2012) to win an Olympic medal in boxing. Her bronze was secured after defeating Nadine Apetz of Germany and Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei before losing in the semi-final to eventual gold medallist Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey.

National and early career
Borgohain began her career in muay thai before transitioning to boxing under coach Padum Boro at her school in Barpathar. She was inducted into the Sports Authority of India (SAI) programme and later trained at the national camp in Patiala. She has won multiple medals at the Senior Women's National Boxing Championships representing Assam, and has been associated with Oil India Limited as a sports employee.

Significance
