Overview

Lillete Dubey (born 7 September 1953) is an Indian actress and theatre director who has worked across Indian and international theatre, television and films in Hindi and English. She began her career in Delhi under Barry John and was a founding member of his group, Theatre Action Group, in 1973. In 1991, she established her own troupe, The Primetime Theatre Company.

Dubey is well known for her work in Hindi and English-language cinema. Her notable films include Zubeidaa, Monsoon Wedding (winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival), Chalte Chalte, Baghban, Kal Ho Naa Ho, My Brother…Nikhil, Delhi in a Day and Sonata. In international productions, she appeared in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, whose ensemble cast received a BAFTA recognition, and its sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

She has received several acting honours for her screen work, including a Best Actress award at the Madrid International Film Festival for Bow Barracks Forever and a Best Actress recognition at the Simon Sabela Awards in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, for 3 Days to Go.

In theatre, Dubey has directed and performed in a wide range of productions through The Primetime Theatre Company. Her notable stage credits include 30 Days in September, Adhe Adhure, for which she received a Best Actress honour at the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards, August: Osage County, Dance Like a Man, Where Did I Leave My Purdah and Salaam Noni Appa. Her theatre practice spans both Indian and international texts, and she has continued to engage with new writing alongside established works.
