Background
The college was established during the late colonial period as part of an effort to introduce formal, university-level education in home science for women in India. It was named after Lady Irwin, the wife of Lord Irwin (Edward Wood), who served as Viceroy of India from 1926 to 1931. The institution was set up with the support of the All India Women's Conference (AIWC), an organisation that played a leading role in advancing women's education and welfare in pre-independence India.
From its early years, the college approached home science as a multidisciplinary field combining the natural sciences, social sciences, and applied arts, rather than as a vocational subject alone. This orientation has shaped its later academic structure, with departments addressing nutrition, textiles, child development, resource management, and extension education.
Academic structure
The college offers undergraduate programmes leading to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Home Science, with specialisations available at the postgraduate level. Major areas of study and research include:
- Food and Nutrition
- Human Development and Childhood Studies
- Resource Management and Design Application
- Fabric and Apparel Science
- Development Communication and Extension
Postgraduate programmes (Master of Science) are offered in these specialisations, along with research leading to doctoral degrees through the University of Delhi.
Significance
Lady Irwin College has historically contributed to the development of home science as an academic discipline in India, training generations of teachers, nutritionists, dietitians, early-childhood specialists, designers, and development professionals. Its faculty have been involved in advisory work for government bodies dealing with nutrition policy, child welfare, and women's development. The college's extension wing has long engaged with communities in and around Delhi on issues of health, nutrition, and livelihood.
Campus
The campus is situated on Sikandra Road in central New Delhi, near Mandi House and within the Lutyens-era civic precinct. The location places it close to several other University of Delhi institutions and to cultural and administrative centres of the capital.
