Overview

Kuvempu University is a public state university located at Shankaraghatta in Bhadravathi taluk of Shivamogga district, Karnataka, India. It was established in 1987 by an act of the Karnataka state legislature through amendment No. 28/1976 dated 29 January 1989 under the Karnataka State University Act, 1976. The university is named after the renowned Kannada poet Kuvempu.

The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes across a wide range of disciplines. It was recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1994 and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

The headquarters of the university is situated at the Jnana Sahyadri Campus in Shivamogga. The name Jnana Sahyadri translates to "The Western Ghat section of knowledge", reflecting the campus's location amid the Sahyadri mountain ranges. The campus spreads across an area of about 230 acres and is noted for its natural setting, with both wild and domestic animals seen within its premises.

The university exercises jurisdiction over the malnad districts of Shivamogga and Chikmagaluru, regions through which the Sahyadri ranges pass. Through its affiliated colleges and on-campus departments, it caters to higher education needs in this part of Karnataka.
