Overview
Kuvempu University is a state public university located at Jnana Sahyadri, Shankaraghatta, in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka, India. Established in 1987, the university serves the Malnad region of central Karnataka and is named after the Jnanpith Award–winning Kannada poet Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, popularly known as Kuvempu, who was a noted son of the region.

Background
The university was carved out of the University of Mysore to serve the educational needs of the Malnad and central Karnataka region. The main campus at Shankaraghatta is set on the foothills of the Western Ghats, near Bhadravathi, and is known by the name Jnana Sahyadri, meaning "the Sahyadri of knowledge". The choice of name honours Kuvempu, who hailed from Kuppali in the same region and whose literary contributions in Kannada earned him the Jnanpith Award.
