Overview
Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University is a state government university located in Nalbari, in the Indian state of Assam. Established in 2011, the university is named after Kumar Bhaskar Varma, the noted ruler of ancient Kamarupa, reflecting its core focus on the classical and ancient heritage of the region.
The university was founded primarily to promote the study of the Sanskrit language and the history of Kamarupa, the ancient kingdom that flourished in what is now Assam and adjoining areas. In addition to these specialised disciplines, the institution offers programmes in general fields of study, including the arts and humanities, as well as professional courses, thereby combining traditional learning with contemporary academic pursuits.
By integrating Sanskrit studies and research into ancient history with broader academic offerings, the university serves as a centre for both classical scholarship and modern higher education in the region. Its establishment reflects state-level efforts to preserve and develop knowledge systems associated with Sanskrit literature, ancient Indian texts, and the cultural and historical legacy of Kamarupa.
