Geography
Kottakuppam lies on the Bay of Bengal coast, immediately north of the union territory of Puducherry. The settlement is bordered by the Ariyankuppam estuary area to the south and stretches along the East Coast Road, which connects Chennai with Puducherry and Cuddalore. Because the territorial boundary between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry runs through this area, Kottakuppam abuts Puducherry's northern limits and shares much of its built-up area with the territory's suburbs.
Administration
Administratively, Kottakuppam falls within the Vanur taluk of Viluppuram district. Civic functions are handled by the Kottakuppam town panchayat under the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Town Panchayats. For parliamentary elections it forms part of the Viluppuram Lok Sabha constituency, and it falls within the Vanur state assembly constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates.
Economy
The local economy combines fishing, small-scale trade, and services linked to the cross-border movement of people and goods between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The area along the East Coast Road has seen growth in retail outlets, automobile showrooms, marriage halls, and small industrial units, reflecting its position as a peri-urban extension of Puducherry. Marine fishing villages along the coast supply local markets in both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Transport
Kottakuppam is served by the East Coast Road and by frequent bus services operated by the State Express Transport Corporation, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, and the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation. The nearest railway station is at Puducherry, and the nearest airport is Puducherry Airport at Lawspet. Chennai International Airport is the closest major airport.
Culture and landmarks
The settlement contains several Hindu temples and Catholic churches, the latter reflecting the long French missionary presence in the surrounding region. The coastline near Kottakuppam is dotted with traditional fishing hamlets known locally as kuppams, from which the town derives its name (kotta meaning fort and kuppam meaning a coastal hamlet). The area is close to Auroville and to the heritage quarters of Puducherry, which draw tourist traffic through the town.
